With the Holidays just around the corner and the days getting shorter and colder let’s take a moment to appreciate the start of “Cozy Knit Season.”
From chunky cable knits to fisherman sweaters; cowlnecks to turtlenecks; oversized ti cardigans, I love them all; and just because the skies are getting gloomier it doesn’t mean we also have to match its energy. Why do so many of us stick to a neutral aesthetic in fall and winter? Isn’t wearing black, gray and black just a little bit….boring?
With Seasonal Affective Disorder a real issue for so many, I think it’s especially important to embrace bright colorful clothing to help boost our moods when everything else around us seems so grey and dull — and others would agree.
According to Mental Health America, happy, bright colors can increase your mental activity and leave you feeling rejuvenated and energized. This is particularly helpful for those dealing with depression or low energy. In fact there is a whole scientific movement dedicated to studying how different colors affect human mood and behavior. Color Psychology explores how colors can influence emotional responses, and in turn, responses to color are affected by factors such as age and cultural background.
Colors have symbolic meaning, as well. For example, pink, which is arguably the Preppy Anthem Color, invokes soft, reserved and earthy vibes; while purple, for example, represents mystery, nobility and glamor; and so on and so forth. We all know that Preppy Girls love these colors as well as many other soft colors (otherwise known as the “pastels”).
